A Saudi tourist was trampled to death by an African elephant after he left his car during a safari viewing.
On Jan. 25, a man named Ayman Sayed Elshahany was trampled to death by an African elephant after he left his car during a safari drive in Uganda’s Murchison Falls national park. During safaris, tourists are allowed to leave their vehicles and explore, Newsweek reports.
A spokesperson for Uganda Wildlife, Bashir Hangi said Elshahany was doing a game drive with his friends when they decided to stop along the tour to take a bathroom break. Elshahany is said to have walked a further distance away from the car, and that’s when the elephant immediately charged toward him and killed him. The distance between him and the car made it difficult for the man to get back to safety.
To combat incidents like this ever happening again, park officials said they would be looking into new security protocols. Officials added that they would also investigate why the elephant charged at him; no action against the elephant has taken place, Newsweek reports.
