As if Southwest Airlines didn’t already have exceptional deals, the company has unveiled a new, second cheapest fare tier.
On Thursday, Southwest announced its “Wanna Get Away Plus” fare, which is just above its “Wanna Get Away” fare but just below its “Anytime” fare. The new tier allows travelers to make same-day changes to their flights without paying the difference, which is required with the lower tier.
In addition, customers who choose the new fare will also earn more frequent flyer miles and be able to transfer flight credits to another RapidRewards member. This new feature has previously been taboo in the flight industry. Most airlines do not allow travelers to transfer flight credits, giving Southwest another advantage. The only stipulation is that both parties must be members of the rewards program to transfer the credits, valid for 12 months from the original flight. The new tier will still allow users two free checked bags.
Southwest hopes that the new fare will increase sales as they continue to recover from the devastating COVID-19 pandemic, which devastated the aviation industry. They are also banking on people wanting to upgrade from the “Wanna Get Away” fare to enjoy the new perks.
The new fare will go on sale in the second quarter, which is usually marked by an increase in sales due to the bustling vacation season.
