R. Kelly has won at least one of his legal battles against the feds. The disgraced singer is now off suicide watch after he filed a lawsuit against the prison
In new court documents obtained by TMZ, Metropolitan Detention Center Warden Heriberto H. Tellez confirmed he made the decision Tuesday to remove Kelly from suicide watch following a “clinical assessment.”
Last week, the singer filed his lawsuit alleging that he was being subjected to “cruel and unusual punishment,” which is a violation of his 8th Amendment rights when he was put on suicide watch at Brooklyn’s MDC.
He also claimed that he wasn’t even thinking about suicide and informed prison officials he wasn’t. Kelly then said he was being placed under these harsh conditions because of his celebrity status.
As a response, the feds filed a motion opposing the suit, saying they would clinically assess Kelly for the suicide watch timeframe.
Last Wednesday, Kelly was sentenced to 30 years in prison after he was found guilty of on federal racketeering and sex trafficking charges.
He still faces another federal case in Illinois and a state-level case in Minnesota. Both deal with child sex-related charges.
