Quinta Brunson has added to Black excellence by becoming the first Black woman to receive three comedy Emmy nominations in the same year.
She has also made Emmy history with her three nominations with “Abbott Elementary,” for outstanding comedy series, lead actress in a comedy, and writing for a comedy series.
Brunson, 32, is also the youngest Black woman ever nominated in the acting category, Variety reported.
The inclusion of Black creatives has progressed over time, but there’s still a long way to go.
Despite the past two Emmy awards delivering two comedy series with Black producers recognized (2021 with “Black-ish” and “Cobra Kai” and 2020 with “Insecure” and “What We Do in the Shadows”), there has been only one Black person who has won the Emmys’ top comedy category ever — Winifred Hervey for “The Golden Girls” in 1987.
“Abbott Elementary” is among the eight nominated shows in the category and would be the first broadcast network show to take home the award in the category since “Modern Family” in 2014.
The 74th Emmys will air on Sept. 12.
