Polio Detected In Samples Of Sewage Found In Two New York Counties

Polio has been detected in sewage samples outside of New York City.

Between COVID-19 and Monkeypox, the world is trying its best to dodge getting any type of sickness or disease. But it looks like Poliomyelitis (polio) is back on the scene after going under the radar for years. The United States has been polio-free since 1979.

But, water samples from two different locations – Rockland County and Orange County –  reportedly tested positive for the virus, according to the New York State Department of Health.

“These environmental findings — which further indicate potential community spread — in addition to the paralytic polio case identified among a Rockland County resident, underscore the urgency of every New York adult and child getting immunized against polio, especially those in the greater New York metropolitan area,” New York health officials said, NBC News reports.

Officials are now looking into whether or not the virus has spread further into the community.
