Former Donald Trump adviser Steve Bannon was sentenced Friday to four months in prison and fined $6,500 for defying a subpoena from the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol.

In September of last year, Bannon was subpoenaed by the Jan. 6 panel for records and testimony. The one-time chief strategist for the former president refused to comply and was found guilty of contempt in July.

Federal prosecutors were seeking a six-month sentence and recommended that he pay a maximum fine of $200,000 for “his sustained, bad-faith.”

“From the moment that the Defendant, Stephen K. Bannon, accepted service of a subpoena from the House Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol … he has pursued a bad-faith strategy of defiance and contempt,” prosecutors said in court documents ahead of the sentencing.

U.S. District Judge Carl Nichols will allow Bannon to remain free while he appeals his case.
