Defendants in the wrongful conviction lawsuits related to Malcolm X’s assassination have been awarded a $36 million settlement.
New York City will pay $26 million, while the state of New York will pay $10 million, according to a report from the Associated Press, citing attorney David Shanies.
Both men were formally exonerated last year after “new evidence” in the case had been discovered. Previously, Muhammad Aziz,84, was released from prison in 1985 on parole, while Khalil Islam, who died in 2009 at age 74, was released in 1987.
A New York City Law Department representative stated on Sunday that the recently disclosed settlement “brings some measure of justice” following the two men’s wrongful convictions.
“This settlement brings some measure of justice to individuals who spent decades in prison and bore the stigma of being falsely accused of murdering an iconic figure,” the spokesperson. “Based on our review, this office stands by the opinion of former Manhattan District Attorney Vance, who stated, based on his investigation, that ‘there is one ultimate conclusion: Mr. Aziz and Mr. Islam were wrongfully convicted of this crime.'”
Aziz and Islam’s estate are expected to split the $36 million settlement once documents related to the settlement are signed and approved in the coming days.
