Opening statements began Monday in Tory Lanez‘s trial over allegedly shooting Megan thee Stallion.
Lanez is accused of shooting at the “NDA” rapper, wounding both of her feet, after shouting “dance, bitch” following a party at the home of Kylie Jenner in July 2020.
The trial is expected to last for more than a week, with Megan testifying in addition to her former bestie Kelsey Harris and Corey Gamble taking the stand.
Per Rolling Stones reporter Nancy Dillon, prosecutors shared in the opening statements that Harris will testify she “saw her close friend get shot by the defendant.” Prosecutors also presented text messages Harris sent to Megan’s bodyguard saying the rapper had been shot by Lanez.
Lawyer for Workers also broke down the opening statements on Instagram, noting that prosecutors claim that after leaving a party at Jenner’s home, an argument in a car between Megan and Tory ensued after Meg insulted Tory’s rap skills. This led to Meg jumping out of the car and Tory shooting at her feet.
On the other hand, Dillion tweeted that the defense argued that the case is about jealousy, saying the fight started after Meg got jealous of Tory getting cozy with Kylie Jenner in the pool.
Lawyer for Workers also explained in his breakdown that, according to the defense, Kelsey and Megan fought that night. Lanez’s team also argued that Meg got upset that Tory was getting cozy with Jenner, and things escalated to the point where Jenner asked Meg to leave. Tory later questioned why Kelsey was backing up Meg, accusing the rapper of going behind her former friend’s back and hooking up with men she’s been with, including Lanez himself, DaBaby, and NBA player Ben Simmons.
Simmons denied the allegations on his Instagram story Monday with the infamous Rick Ross “false accusations” meme.
As previously reported, Lanez was initially charged with assault with a semi-automatic firearm and carrying an unregistered firearm in a vehicle. Just last week, he was hit with an additional felony-level count of discharging a firearm with gross negligence was added to the case.
