According to sources close to the Grammys, the Grammys wanted to honor Janet Jackson last weekend, but the plan fell short because of the icon’s relationship with CBS.
Apparently, the Grammys didn’t know how to address how CBS treated Jackson after her infamous 2004 Super Bowl Halftime performance.
Sources told TMZ that the Grammys wanted to honor Janet with a Global Impact Award, but it didn’t go as planned. Recording Academy executives wanted the singer to attend a pre-Grammy event with the Black Music Collective before the main event to accept the award. Jackson’s schedule wouldn’t allow it.
TMZ also learned discussions shifted when it came to how Janet could receive the honor during the actual broadcast, which presented another problem because CBS never made amends with Jackson following her Super Bowl wardrobe malfunction.
In 2004, Jackson performed the half-time show with Justin Timberlake when Timberlake ripped Janet’s top, revealing her breast. CBS received a lot of backlash over the incident, and CBS CEO Les Moonves pulled Jackson’s invite to the Grammys that year.
Apparently, the parties tried to come up with a way for the network to apologize and acknowledge how Jackson was treated, but those talks fizzled and became too complicated.
Since Janet couldn’t attend the Black Music Collective event, she didn’t get the Global Impact Award. She didn’t attend the Grammys this year or hasn’t been to its award show in years.
