Oregon is considering a bill that would provide homeless and low-income individuals with $1000 a month in universal basic income.
According to reports, the Oregon legislature is considering a bill to establish a People’s Housing Assistance Fund Demonstration Program through the state’s Department of Human Services.
The bill aims to “provide 12 monthly payments of $1,000 to individuals who are experiencing homelessness, are at risk of homelessness, are severely rent burdened or earn at or below 60 percent of area median income.”
A study on who receives the money would be required based on a few demographic factors, such as race, veteran status, and domestic violence risk.
The receivers of the $1,000 payments can decide how to use the money, although advocates claim it would go towards rent and other living expenses.
However, some receivers may use the money for other expenses, such as alcohol or drugs, which could be bad.
