O.J. Simpson is finally opening up about “The Story of O.J.” by Jay-Z, claiming the rapper misquoted him.
“The Story of O.J.” was one of Jay-Z’s songs on his 2017 studio album 4:44. On the song’s opening verse, Jay-z raps: “O.J. like, ‘I’m not black, I’m O.J.’… Okay. House n*gga, don’t f*ck with me. I’m a field n*gga, with shined cutlery.”
During an interview with Rare Clothing Apparel, fashion designer Augustus Lymon asked the former NFL player how he felt about the rapper’s lyrics.
“Well, first of all, [Jay-Z] didn’t say it right,” he asserted. “When Johnny [Cochran] was talking to me about it, and all that was going on was ‘Black, Black, Black,’ I said, man, f**k being Black, this is me. This is about O.J. You know? It wasn’t about Black or white. It was about, ‘These guys were after me.’ So that’s how that was expressed. It wasn’t about, you know, ‘I’m not Black.’ It was about, ‘this ain’t about being Black, this is about me.'”
Initially, the track was made in reference to the retired athlete accused of killing his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman in 1995 but was ultimately found not guilty.
Despite Simpson’s accomplishments and prosperity, Jay-Z’s song argued that his skin color will still serve as a social identifier in America.
Now, this isn’t the first time the Brooklyn rapper referenced the former NFL player in songs.
On his single “Roc Boys” from his American Gangster album, Jay-Z rapped: “Think O.J./I get away with murder when I sling yay.”
