Lola Brooke recently dropped her new single “Blind Em,” which samples Clipse’s 2002 hit “Grindin.”
The rapper sat down with Mass Appeal and Google Pixel, discussing what made her want to hop on the iconic beat.
“So The reason for me choosing ‘Grinding’ beat, it was because how it made me feel as a kid,” the Brooklyn rapper explained. “I was freestyling it in the lunch room all the time. I finally got a chance to go in the booth with it. So it was like, ‘This is your shot, girl,’ and I just took it.”
She admitted that hopping on a classic record is “very intimidating.”
Elsewhere in the interview, she talked about being a tomboy while growing up in Brooklyn. At the time, she preferred an effortless, casual style.
“Representation in hip hop is important for women,” she said,” because we don’t get a lot of chances. We only get one. And men get so many.”
Lola said that as she grew as an artist, she dug back into pioneers like Lil Kim and Foxy Brown. She reveals that she was influenced by Miss Elliott and Eve.
