Jeezy opens up about his past suicidal thoughts as he reflects on his successful career.
In his recently published memoir titled Adversity for Sale, Jeezy contemplates the hardships that paved the way for his career. Following a period of engaging in car theft and drug trade, he made the pivotal decision to enroll in the Youth Challenge program. Right from the start, he recognized that the path ahead wouldn’t be straightforward or effortless.
“It taught me structure,” he said to PEOPLE. “And it took me out of the environment that I was in for me to become even more focused than I was because I thought I was focused, but I really wasn’t. I didn’t have a plan. I just was going through the motions.”
As the conclusion of the nine-month program drew near, Jeezy participated in a field trip to a naval base, where he found himself aboard a ship, leading to a significant eye-opening moment.
“I remember standing there and saying to myself, ‘Man, if you go back home and you don’t figure this out… because I don’t want to end up like my friends,” he added. “My friends became junkies, and they were getting killed and all these things.”
The rapper continued, Â “So it was all this stuff in my head. I just remember standing there, and it was for a brief moment, I would say at least about 10 minutes, I actually contemplated jumping in the water. I had never had suicidal thoughts. But I [thought], ‘Well, sh*t, if I just jump in the water, I ain’t gotta deal with this. I ain’t gotta go back home. I gotta do none of these things.'”
Thankfully, Jeezy had a change of heart and was “ready for anything” once he left the program.
