OpenAI, the company responsible for ChatGPT, has verified that the chatbot is now capable of internet browsing to deliver users up-to-date information.
The AI system initially confined its data scope to information up until September 2021. This advancement now permits specific premium users to seek information about current events and obtain news through the chatbot. OpenAI has conveyed its intention to make this feature accessible to all users in the coming times.
“Browsing is available to Plus and Enterprise users today, and we’ll expand to all users soon. To enable, choose Browse with Bing in the selector under GPT-4,” OpenAI said.
Earlier this week, the startup made a significant announcement, introducing a major update that will empower ChatGPT to engage in voice conversations with users and interact with them using images. This advancement brings ChatGPT closer to well-known AI assistants such as Apple’s Siri.
OpenAI had previously experimented with a feature in its premium ChatGPT Plus offering that enabled users to access up-to-date information through the Bing search engine. However, this feature was subsequently disabled due to concerns that it might inadvertently enable users to bypass paywalls.
ChatGPT achieved a historic milestone earlier this year after reaching 100 million monthly active users in January. However, it was later overtaken by Meta’s Threads app. This surge in popularity has led to increased investor interest in OpenAI. Recent reports suggest that OpenAI is discussing with shareholders the potential sale of existing shares at a higher value than just a few months ago.
