An Iowa teen violently attacked his students and staff on the first day back from Winter break.
The gunman, identified as 17-year-old Dylan Butler, opened fire at Perry High School shortly after 7:00 a.m. Calls began coming in about an active shooter at 7:37 a.m. Five students were shot, including one six-grader who sadly passed away from his injuries. Perry High School Principal Dan Marburger was also shot. At least one victim is now in critical condition. The remaining are said to be stable and recovering at nearby hospitals.
“Police officers responded within minutes. They immediately made entry and witnessed students and faculty either sheltering in place or running from the school,” stated Mitch Mortvedt, assistant director of the Iowa Department of Public Safety’s Division of Criminal Investigation.
Butler died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Around the time of the mass shooting, the killer made “a number of social media posts.” Mortvedt confirmed that investigators are looking into his online activity. This could help determine a possible motive and the state of mind that Butler may have been in. Authorities have confirmed that he used a pump-action shotgun and a small-caliber handgun to carry out the massacre, though it’s still unknown how he obtained the weapons. His parents or guardians have not yet come forward.
Perry is a small town with about 8,000 residents. The high school and middle school are connected. Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds said the “senseless tragedy has shaken our entire state to the core.”
This is such an incredibly tragic case of gun violence.
