One person is dead, and nine people are injured after violence erupted Wednesday afternoon during the Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl victory parade.
Nearly one million people were expected to attend what was supposed to be a festive day in Kansas City, Missouri. However, as the massive crowd congregated in the area to witness the team and celebrate their second consecutive championship win, gunfire erupted near a garage west of Union Station. The shots prompted panic, sending people scrambling and the 600 police on sight struggling to get to injured victims.
Officials reported one fatality, three victims in critical condition, five in serious condition, and one with non-life-threatening injuries.
Many people have also been displaced from their loved ones. Police have now established 2301 Main of the Union Station entrance as the designated spot where parents can come if they are looking for their children who were separated when the crowd began to run.
Kansas Governor Laura Kelly was among the attendees. Shortly after the gunshots were heard, she was quickly swept away from the scene, as she confirmed on social media.
“I have been evacuated and am out of harm’s way. I encourage everyone to follow instructions and updates from @kcpolice. Please stay safe,” Kelly tweeted.
