Floyd Mayweather is opening up about the passing of his assistant Marikit ‘Kitchie’ Laurico. Her passing last May was sudden and came as a surprise to her family and his whole team. Never truly speaking about it publicly, the boxer sat down with The Pivot podcast and showed a vulnerable side that many fans have never seen.
Pivot co-host Ryan Clark said one of the most beautiful things about visiting Mayweather’s home was hearing him speak about Kitchie. Gayle King was on the Pivot previously and spoke highly of Kitchie, as they had a personal relationship as well. Mayweather was asked how the losses of his late partner and Kitchie have affected him.
“We don’t want to talk about that… we gonna get through this,” Mayweather told the Pivot crew as he took a moment to compose himself. “That’s tough because she’s my best friend. People wouldn’t really understand that people like your drivers and your assistants are your best friends. Kitchie was the only person in life that I could talk about anything to. That knew my deepest secrets, there was no male or female in my life that I told more stuff to than her.”
As he mentioned in the podcast episode, her loss has hurt Floyd, and he can often be reminded of her.
“The only Super Bowl she really wanted to go to was the one in Las Vegas. She was so happy. For her 50th birthday, she wanted to go to Aruba. Was going to have a big party for her. I was able to take her to 100 countries; she taught me a lot. She helped me a lot. Through the rain, sleet, snow, and Hell, she had my back.”
He also talked about her generosity and how she tried to help his children to be positive people.
“We was in Dubai. I was in the room and I was talking to her and I told her this ‘You have to listen to me because if you’re gone it’s going to be too late. You have to listen to me. And within six days, she was gone, powerful words sometimes. But I was just telling her that because I wanted her to take care of herself,” Mayweather said.
Mayweather explained that he only wanted the best for Kitchie and emphasized the importance of health being wealth.
Mayweather’s emotional moment was moving and showed the authenticity of their relationship. Check out the clip below.
