One NBA official, Tony Brothers, has been particularly notable for his interactions with players this season. One of the most talked-about incidents involved Chris Paul, who, after an altercation with Brothers last week, described him as a “tick tocker.” Paul was ejected from the game on March 23rd following their exchange. He later expressed concerns to the media, suggesting that Brothers wields too much power as an official. This was further fueled by a video Paul shared on social media, showing Brothers admitting in an interview his lack of interest in basketball. However, Teague’s encounter with Brothers was notably different.
Recalling an early career game, Teague shared a memorable story with the Club 520 team. During his first or second season, while playing away against Indiana, Teague had the support of his mother and aunt, who were cheering from the courtside. During a break in the game, Brothers approached Teague, attempting to be friendly in a manner that took Teague by surprise.
“I was just a rookie, and we were facing the Pacers. I was with the Hawks, and there were my mom and aunt, right there courtside, cheering for me every time I got on the court,” Teague recounted to the Club 520 crew. “Then, out of nowhere, Brothers comes up to me, tries to act cool, and asks, ‘Man, who are those ladies?’ I couldn’t believe it. I was like, ‘Man, that’s my mom and aunt!’ I was just so taken aback, and even though he kept apologizing, you know how it is, he always tries to be the cool guy.”
Teague went on to explain how Brothers’ demeanor could switch in an instant—from being the “cool” official one moment to calling a technical foul for minor infractions the next, often disrupting the brief, cordial relationships he might form with players.
