The beef between Drake and fellow rappers continues to brew, and now we’re getting insight into Rick Ross‘ claims of the Toronto star sending a cease-and-desist letter to French Montana.
Prior to this, Ross had unfollowed Drake on social media, and he later explained that he had only done so because of the c&d letter.
This later set the stage for some pointed lyrics on his track “Push Ups.”
Following that, Ross dropped “Champagne Moments,” in which he again discussed Drake issuing a cease-and-desist to French Montana over a verse. Fans initially questioned the validity of this allegation, but recent revelations suggest otherwise.
During an appearance on The Joe Budden Podcast, Gamma CEO Larry Jackson confirmed the existence of the cease & desist, explaining the situation.
“The cease-and-desist letter was a real thing,” Jackson revealed. “I thought that was really funny…but other than that, I got nothing.” He further added, “We all have different senses of humor. I thought it was funny. I didn’t think anybody was really trying to be nefarious. I just thought it was a joke.”
Jackson shared his thoughts on the broader landscape of rap beef, highlighting the gains made by label executives amidst such conflicts. He explained how diss tracks bring in revenue streams, ultimately benefiting the labels.
In “Champagne Moments,” released on Monday (April 15), Ross elaborates on why he chose to unfollow Drake on Instagram. “I unfollowed you, na, ’cause you sent the muthafkin’ cease-and-desist to French Montana, na,” he declared. “You sent the police, n*a, hatin’ on my dog project.”
Speculation among fans suggests that the unreleased track “Splash Brothers” may have caused the cease-and-desist letter.
The song was initially supposed to be Drake alongside Ross on French Montana’s “They Got Amnesia” project in 2021. Though reports surfaced that Drake scrapped the track due to the Astroworld tragedy, this was never officially confirmed.
Eventually, Lil Wayne replaced Drake on the final version of the song, which was intended for French’s 2024 project, “Mac & Cheese 5.”
During the Podcast episode, Budden and Jackson also suggested different motives behind the escalating tension directed at Drake.
Joe suggested, “The labels got st running through Drake, I’m telling you.” He anticipated more revelations, hinting, “One of these n*as is going to spill the beans soon…There’s something here that we don’t know enough about yet…I think Drake owns some of Gamma.”
