Lauryn Hill is speaking out following the news that she and The Fugees‘ North American tour has been canceled. The highly anticipated “Miseducation Anniversary Tour,” celebrating the 25th anniversary of her iconic album, was set to kick off in Tampa on August 9, with stops in major cities like New York, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Dallas, Houston, and Milwaukee. However, on Tuesday, concertgoers were notified that the shows had been canceled.
In an emotional statement, Hill explained, “With difficulty, the decision was made to pull down our upcoming North American tour dates. The shows in the UK and Europe ARE MOVING FORWARD as planned.”
Hill attributed the cancellation to an injury she faced last year and the impact of sensationalist media coverage on ticket sales. “Regrettably, some media outlet’s penchant for sensationalism and clickbait headlines have seemingly created a narrative that has affected ticket sales for the North American portion of the tour,” she noted.
She stressed the significance of her performances, stating, “Performing for my fans is a profound exchange of energy and emotion that excites me every time. Every show is a piece of my expression and testament to our connection and shared love for music. I can assure you that no one is more disappointed about not being able to perform than I am.”
Despite the cancellation, Hill expressed her gratitude and commitment to her art. “Know that I am not only grateful for those who appreciate and support my art, but that I FIGHT and push through all kinds of resistance to put together experiences that mean something for all of us. I love being able to bring these performances to you!”
Concertgoers who purchased tickets received emails on August 6 informing them of the cancellation and that refunds would be processed soon. While North American fans are undoubtedly disappointed, the good news is that Hill and The Fugees will still perform for their fans in the UK and Europe. The overseas leg of the tour kicks off in Manchester, England, on October 12 and concludes in Amsterdam on October 22, with stops in London and Paris in between.
Hill concluded her statement by looking forward to future performances: “We’re looking forward to performing at the shows in the UK and Europe in October — and for our fans in North America, when these unforeseen circumstances are resolved, we’ll be back in full force… With Love, Respect and Honesty.”
The Miseducation Anniversary Tour commemorates the 25th anniversary of Hill’s groundbreaking Billboard 200 No. 1 album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. While the North American dates are no longer happening, Hill’s dedication to her music and her fans remains as strong as ever.
