Former college football star Diondre Overton tragically lost his life in a shooting early Saturday morning in North Carolina.
The Guildford County Sheriff’s Office released a statement explaining that deputies were called to the scene of a loud party at 3205 Spring Mill Road, Greensboro, around 2:30 a.m. Shortly after, reports of a shooting came in, and when deputies arrived, they found Overton, who, despite receiving immediate medical attention, was pronounced dead at the scene. Overton, who played wide receiver for Clemson from 2016 to 2019 and was part of two national championship teams, was just 26 years old.
In response to this devastating loss, Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney paid tribute by laying flowers at Overton’s plaque by the stadium.

Though Overton went undrafted after Clemson, his football journey took him through various teams, including the Canadian Football League’s Hamilton Tiger-Cats, Europe’s Vienna Vikings, and multiple teams in the United States Football League. Most recently, he was selected by the Memphis Showboats in January of this year.
The shooting remains under investigation.
