The world’s most expensive bag just hit the runway, and it’s worth every penny.
Last week, the iconic French label Rabanne turned things up a notch at Paris Fashion Week with the jaw-dropping reveal of what’s now hailed as the world’s most expensive handbag. This stunning purse, known as the 1969 Golden Bag, is crafted from 18-karat gold. It is a shining tribute to the late designer’s legendary 1968 minidress designed for fashion muse Françoise Hardy. This garment is renowned among style historians, as it was famously adorned with 1,000 gold plaques and 300 carats of diamonds. Ironically, this is known as the world’s most expensive dress.
The Golden Bag was certainly the star of Rabanne’s Spring 2025 runway show, and the price of this unique piece only increased interest. With a staggering price tag of $278,353, the 1969 Golden Bag is the result of a carefully crafted collaboration between Rabanne and renowned jeweler Arthus Bertrand. Taking 100 hours to create, the sack’s interlinked gold discs add a futuristic elegance that has always defined the brand.
For those who don’t wish to spend over a quarter million dollars on this particular purse, Rabanne has a similar Gold 1969 Nano bag on its website, priced only at $1,050. Unlike its pricier counterpart, this one is made only of brass, not genuine gold.
The Hermes Birkin bag has long been regarded as the costliest bag around, though it now has some competition.
