It’s okay to want an “Ayesha Curry” in your life, but at what point does it go from wanting an ‘Ayesha Curry’ to bashing and generalizing women? There’s a fine line, and Ayesha sat down with Essence.com to discuss it.
Back in 2015, Ayesha Curry randomly tweeted “Everyone’s into barely wearing clothes these days huh? Not my style. I like to keep the good stuff covered up for the one who matters.” Since then, it seems like men of social media have hoisted her onto a pedestal, using her as an example of the prize woman. Did Ayesha Curry ask to be used as this example? Are some men doing more harm than good?
Since her tweet, everyone has shared their opinion. Even photographs from Ayesha’s cooking show have been used to reiterate the ‘Ayesha standard’ that some women are being shamed over. The 27 year old mommy of two was asked if it personally hurt her feelings to see some of the shady memes online. “It’s not hurtful [to me]. It doesn’t affect my personal life but it just doesn’t make sense to me,” she tells Essence. “I wonder why people are so hateful sometimes. I just don’t get it. I want people to know these memes aren’t coming from me and I didn’t endorse them. I have a feeling whoever is making them is mostly men trying to pin women against each other and that’s something I don’t stand for especially with us Black women. I just wish we could support each other a little bit more. I want everybody to succeed.”
I’ve always said the same thing; those memes are basically certain men, with too much time on their hands, pinning Ayesha Curry against other women. Unfortunately, Ayesha Curry ends up seeing the backlash from that. Honestly, wanting a certain type of woman is one thing, but definitely isn’t necessary to bash the other type. If all you attract is a “certain type” and that type isn’t “Ayesha Curry,” then you must ask yourself what it is about you that attracts that type. Because Ayesha is simply a reflection of her husband Steph Curry.
