NFL fans are buzzing with speculation after Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy did not immediately re-sign with the team. Many have started wondering if Deion Sanders, known as “Coach Prime,” might make the jump from college football to the NFL this offseason. According to FOX Sports, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and Sanders recently had a phone conversation regarding the head coaching position.
While no formal interview has been scheduled, reports indicate that Jones and Sanders plan to continue their discussions in the coming weeks. Speaking to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Sanders expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to hear from Jones.
“To hear from Jerry Jones is truly delightful, and it’s intriguing,” Sanders said Monday night. “I love Jerry and believe in Jerry. After you hang up, process it, and think about it, it’s intriguing. But I love Boulder and everything there is about our team, the coaches, our student body, and the community.”
Deion Sanders just wrapped up his second season as head coach at the University of Colorado, leading the Buffaloes to a 9-4 record and their first bowl game appearance since he took over the program. Sanders signed a five-year, $29.5 million contract with Colorado and has been instrumental in rebuilding the team’s reputation.
Sanders also made waves in recruiting, securing a commitment from five-star quarterback Julian Lewis, positioning the Buffaloes as a team to watch next season. With the transfer portal in full swing, Sanders has expressed his goal of competing for the Big 12 Championship if he stays in Boulder.
Sanders’ connection to the Dallas Cowboys adds an extra layer of intrigue to the speculation. He played five seasons for the team from 1995 to 1999, helping Dallas secure a victory in Super Bowl XXX. His history with the Cowboys and his charisma as a coach have fueled conversations about whether a reunion could happen.
For now, Sanders seems committed to his role at Colorado, where he’s made a significant impact in just two seasons. But in today’s rapidly evolving sports world, a move to the NFL isn’t entirely out of the question.
