Donald Trump has confirmed that he will reinstate TikTok on day one of his presidency.
In a bold statement on Truth Social, Trump declared that he would issue an executive order on Monday to extend the period before the law’s prohibitions take effect, allowing time for a deal that would address national security concerns while keeping the popular app available to Americans.
“I’m asking companies not to let TikTok stay dark,” Trump said. “I will issue an executive order on Monday to extend the period of time before the law’s prohibitions take effect.”
Trump further outlined his vision for TikTok’s future, proposing a joint venture model in which the United States holds a 50% ownership stake.
“By doing this, we save TikTok, keep it in good hands, and allow it to stay up,” he explained, asserting that without U.S. approval, TikTok’s future would be uncertain. “With our approval, it is worth hundreds of billions of dollars—maybe trillions.”
This proposal marks a dramatic shift in the debate over TikTok’s ownership, positioning the U.S. as a critical player in the app’s future. As of Saturday night, most users in the United States no longer had access to TikTok. Trump’s plan, if implemented, would offer a pathway to save the app from being banned in the country while addressing the security concerns that have prompted scrutiny of its Chinese ownership.
