On Friday, the Trump administration fired a group of Justice Department prosecutors involved in the January 6 Capitol riot cases and is now targeting FBI agents connected to the investigations.
About 24 employees from the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Washington were terminated, according to a source familiar with the matter.
The firings were ordered by Emil Bove, the acting deputy attorney general and a Trump appointee, who previously served as part of Trump’s legal defense team. A memo obtained by the Associated Press revealed that Bove also identified several senior FBI executives, instructing them to either retire or face termination by Monday.
Adding to the shake-up, Bove requested the names, titles, and offices of all FBI personnel involved in the January 6 investigations. This request includes thousands of FBI employees across the country who have supported these investigative efforts.
This action follows Trump’s recent clemency initiative, which has benefited over 1,500 individuals charged or convicted in connection with the January 6 attack. Bove stated that the Department of Justice would now initiate a review process to determine if further personnel changes are necessary.
