The incident happened at approximately 6:35 p.m. on Saturday when Air Wisconsin Flight 6181, an American Airlines Bombardier CRJ-200, was struck by a United Airlines tug vehicle while approaching a gate. Officials reported that the wing of the aircraft hit the tug as it crossed the taxiway, causing the vehicle to flip over and pinning the driver underneath.
Emergency responders rushed to the scene, and Chicago police confirmed that the driver, a 64-year-old man, was transported to Lutheran General Hospital in critical condition. He suffered head and lower body injuries but has since stabilized. Fortunately, no injuries were reported among the aircraft’s passengers. After safely exiting the plane, they were transported by bus to the terminal. Flight 6181 had originally departed from Kalamazoo/Battle Creek International Airport in Michigan before arriving in Chicago.
Authorities have not yet released the name of the injured driver, and further details remain limited. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has been notified, though it has yet to issue a statement regarding the accident.
“Nothing is more important than the safety of our customers and team members, and we are reviewing this incident,” American Airlines said. The FAA confirmed it will investigate. United Airlines added, “We are ensuring he receives any necessary support and care.” The investigation remains ongoing.
