With egg prices soaring, some people are resorting to desperation. Either that or they are trying to cash in on those struggling to find or afford them in stores.
Authorities in Pennsylvania have launched an investigation after 100,000 eggs were stolen from the back of a distribution trailer over the weekend. The eggs, valued at approximately $40,000, were taken from Pete and Gerry’s Organics LLC in Greencastle around 8:40 p.m. on Saturday, according to state police.
Law enforcement has not released additional details as of Tuesday, but the case remains under investigation. In a statement, Pete & Gerry’s Organics acknowledged the theft, saying, “We take this matter seriously and are committed to resolving it as quickly as possible. Due to the ongoing investigation, we cannot comment further.”
The theft comes as egg prices continue to rise nationwide, fueled by bird flu outbreaks and seasonal demand. Over the past year, the average price of a dozen eggs has surged by 50%, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
With egg prices climbing and supply tightening, authorities will be looking closely at whether this heist was an opportunistic crime or part of a larger black-market operation.
