Music industry veteran Lyor Cohen is speaking out against Kanye West, addressing the rapper directly in an open letter that condemns his use of Nazi symbols and antisemitic rhetoric.
Cohen, a highly respected figure in hip-hop, has played a pivotal role in shaping the careers of legends like Run-D.M.C., LL Cool J, and Jay-Z. As the former head of Def Jam and now YouTube’s Global Head of Music, he has been instrumental in bridging cultures and elevating hip-hop on a global scale. Cohen also shares a personal connection with Kanye, having worked with him during his rise at Def Jam.
In his letter, Cohen does not hold back, expressing his “deep disappointment and concern” over Kanye’s recent actions. He highlights how antisemitism is on the rise and stresses that someone with Kanye’s level of influence carries a responsibility to use their voice wisely.
“Your words and actions are not only offensive but triggering to all decent people who recognize the horrors of the Holocaust and the suffering of millions,” Cohen wrote.
He goes on to remind Kanye of the rich history of collaboration between Black and Jewish communities in music, from jazz and blues to the impact of Motown. He urges the rapper to reflect on this shared legacy and use his platform to promote unity instead of division.
“Your talent and reach could be used to heal and inspire, to bridge divides and promote understanding. Instead, you’ve chosen a path that sows discord and perpetuates harmful stereotypes,”Cohen added.
The letter comes at a time when Kanye continues to face backlash for his controversial statements and imagery that many have called out as harmful and dangerous. While Kanye has remained largely unapologetic about his remarks, Cohen’s message serves as a direct appeal for him to reconsider his actions and the impact they have on communities worldwide.
Full Letter:
Dear Kanye,
I am deeply disappointed and troubled by your recent actions involving the use of Nazi symbols and antisemitic rhetoric. Your words and actions are not only offensive but triggering to all decent people who recognize the horrors of the Holocaust and the suffering of millions.
With antisemitism on the rise, your voice and influence carry a significant responsibility. I urge you to be more sensitive to the pain your words inflict on Jewish communities and all those who stand against hate.
Your talent and reach could be used to heal and inspire, to bridge divides and promote understanding. Instead, you’ve chosen a path that sows discord and perpetuates harmful stereotypes.
The Jewish and Black experiences share a rich history of collaboration and mutual support, particularly in the music industry. From the early days of jazz and blues to the groundbreaking work of Motown and beyond, our communities have enriched each other through music and culture.
I urge you to reflect on this shared legacy and use your platform to build upon the love and understanding that have always existed between our communities.
Sincerely,
Lyor
