A Coca-Cola distributor is recalling more than 10,000 cans of soda across Illinois and Wisconsin after concerns over potential contamination with plastic.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) confirmed that the recall was first initiated on March 6 and officially classified it as a Class II recall on March 24. That means the product “may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences”, though the risk of serious harm is considered remote.
According to the FDA, 864 12-packs of Coca-Cola cans — totaling 10,368 cans — are affected by the recall. The impacted products are limited to 12-can packs with UPC codes 0 49000-00634 6 and 0 49000-02890 4. The reason listed: possible contamination from a foreign object (plastic).
No specific explanation was provided for how the contamination may have occurred, and Coca-Cola has not publicly commented on the incident.
Though recalls involving Coca-Cola are rare, this isn’t the first in recent memory. In December 2023, the company pulled 2,000 cases of its beverages due to the risk of “foreign material,” with most of the affected products being Sprite. Earlier this year, a European recall was also issued over chlorate content in beverages produced at a Belgium facility.
