Kevin Liles is clearing the air and making it crystal clear—he says he’s not the man Lady Luck is accusing him of being.
On May 27, the music executive took to Instagram with a six-page statement addressing explosive claims made by rapper Shanell Jones, also known as Lady Luck. According to Liles, he received a letter from Lady Luck and her legal team three weeks ago threatening to file a public lawsuit and release a book containing sexual assault allegations unless he paid her $30 million.
Liles says she accused him of grooming her back in 1999 when she signed to Def Jam, and even went as far as alleging he exposed himself to her and tried to force her into a sexual act inside his car. But Liles didn’t hold back—he publicly denied the accusations and labeled the entire situation an extortion attempt.“None of this ever happened,” he wrote. “Her threatened allegations are totally false.” Liles backed up his defense by pointing to decades of positive interactions between the two, including social media posts and interviews where Lady Luck praised him and expressed love for him and his family. “She has continued outreach and a relationship with both my family and me for the past 26 years,” he noted.
He also gave the public some background. Liles says he signed Lady Luck after hearing her rap on Hot 97 and gave her a shot at stardom—studio time, major features, and national exposure. She was featured on big records in the late ’90s and early 2000s and had a column in The Source magazine. According to him, she even landed a profile in The New Yorker. But Liles claims that after her career didn’t take off the way she hoped, she asked to be released from her Def Jam contract and later blamed others for her stalled momentum.
After her departure, Liles says Lady Luck turned to crime, racking up felony convictions for armed robbery and heroin distribution. He referenced multiple interviews where she called herself a “three-time felon” and admitted to lying in court to beat other charges. Despite all that, Liles says he still tried to help her. As recently as 2024, she asked him to help distribute a new single. He connected her with his former company, and she even described it in an interview as a “full circle moment.”
In his statement, Liles included past Instagram posts where Lady Luck celebrated his birthday, called him “family,” and said she missed Def Jam. In one 2020 post, she included him in a tribute, referring to him as “Pops” and calling his sister “Sis.”Liles also pointed to past interviews and podcasts where she denied ever being abused by older men. In a 2016 video, she explicitly stated she had not experienced sexual trauma from adult men, only “boys” during childhood. She echoed those comments again in 2022 and 2023 on her podcast, saying, “Me personally, I never had [abuse]… from older guys.”
He suggested that these new claims were likely triggered by personal struggles and mental health challenges. “She has often spoken about her long history of substance abuse, addiction, and mental health challenges,” Liles wrote. He also noted that Lady Luck has discussed generational trauma and even suicidal thoughts, especially after facing ridicule during a high-profile rap battle with another female artist.
Liles admitted he was alarmed by her behavior in several recent media appearances, where she allegedly seemed high or intoxicated. In one 2024 interview, she reportedly talked about using cocaine, molly, mushrooms, ayahuasca, and bufo—toad venom—while promoting spiritual practices like “astral projection” and building a “force field” to protect herself from negative energy.
Despite the serious nature of her accusations, Liles says he has no intention of caving under pressure. “I will not be extorted, nor will I pay a dollar to those that threaten to ruin my reputation,” he wrote. He ended his post by promising to continue his work serving the culture while his legal team handles the situation.
