Saturday evening on Truth Social, Donald Trump made a startling announcement: “The United States has just dropped bombs on Iran.” According to Trump, U.S. forces targeted three nuclear facilities, Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan, and the strike planes “have left Iranian air space.” He also sent kudos to the troops, congratulating the “great American Warriors” who conducted the operation. Despite the attack, he emphasized, “Now is the time for peace.”
Trump’s message caught many off guard, as he had previously indicated that a decision on deeper U.S. involvement in the Israel-Iran conflict could take up to two weeks. Observers had noted dramatic military movements earlier that day: B‑2 bombers deployed from the United States, journeying across the Pacific toward Iran, a clear sign that confrontation was approaching.
The strikes follow a wave of exchanges between Israel and Iran. Late last week, Israel launched a surprise attack on Iranian targets, prompting a swift and heavy Iranian missile response. Video from Tel Aviv and Tehran shows extensive destruction. Iran’s health ministry reports “more than 400 people in Iran have been killed … with around 3,500 injured since the bombings began.” By comparison, NBC News cites that “just 24 Israeli civilians have been killed in retaliatory strikes.”
The unfolding conflict is also intensifying political divisions within the MAGA base. A recent segment of “The Tucker Carlson Show” featured Senator Ted Cruz advocating for robust U.S. support of Israel. Carlson pushing back, accusing Cruz of lacking understanding of basic facts, even quipping about Cruz not knowing Israel’s population.
With tensions escalating and global attention fixed on the region, the world now watches to see if Trump’s declaration of seeking peace holds or if it marks the start of a broader escalation.
