Phoenix police have arrested two men in connection with the death of 16-year-old Zariah Dodd, who was nearly six months pregnant when she was found shot and killed in Marivue Park on July 5.
Jurrell Davis, 36, and Jechri James-Gillett, 18, are each facing two counts of first-degree murder—one for Zariah and another for her unborn child. Davis has also been charged with sexual misconduct with a minor.
Authorities say Davis was identified as the father of the unborn baby, making the charges even more disturbing.
According to legal experts, his criminal history, which includes a prior conviction from 2008 for impregnating a 14-year-old girl, could result in harsher sentencing. Prosecutors may pursue life in prison or possibly the death penalty, given the nature of the crime.
James-Gillett is also facing two counts of premeditated first-degree murder. Investigators believe the killing was carefully planned, not a spontaneous act.
Both suspects are currently held on $1 million cash bonds.
Zariah was a resident at Sunshine Residential, a group home in Surprise, Arizona, that serves pregnant and parenting teens. Her death has sparked serious questions about the level of supervision and protection provided at the facility.
Concerns are being raised about how a minor under state care could become pregnant by a man nearly two decades older and be permitted to leave alone at night.
Legal experts suggest the group home may be subject to further investigation and potential legal consequences if negligence is found.
In a statement, Sunshine Residential said Zariah was already pregnant when she entered the program and was receiving care under their Teen Mom Program. The facility emphasized its commitment to supporting young mothers and promised to stand with Zariah’s loved ones in seeking justice.
As the community mourns, many are calling for accountability and systemic reform to ensure that vulnerable youth are better protected.
The case remains active with ongoing legal proceedings. Prosecutors are expected to determine whether to pursue the death penalty as more evidence is reviewed.
