Almost two years ago, former NY Giants kicker Josh Brown was arrested for allegedly physically abusing his then-wife, Molly Brown. Five days later, the fourth-degree domestic violence charge against the New York baller was dropped. At that time, Molly released several documents in which Brown admitted to years of abuse. One year later, the documents were released to the public, sparking outrage and raising questions about the league’s leniency in regards to domestic abusers.
Today, four months after the documents were leaked, Brown sat with Good Morning America to personally discuss the domestic abuse allegations once and for all.
In the interview, Brown admitted to the domestic abuse. However, he denied ever actually hitting his now ex-wife, Molly.
“I mean, I put my hands on her. I kicked the chair. I held her down. The holding down was the worst moment in our marriage,” Brown said. “I never hit her. I never slapped her. I never choked her. I never did those types of things.”
At the time of Brown’s initial arrest, Molly told police that there had been 20 incidents of physical abuse throughout their marriage, a claim Brown denies.
“What I did was wrong. Period,” Brown said. “Domestic violence is not just physical abuse. We’re talking intimidation and threats, the attempt to control, body language. An abuser is going to abuse to a certain degree to acquire some kind of reaction.”
Back in October, in the documented confessions which were written in the form of journal entries, Brown admitted to physically, emotionally and verbally abusing Molly. He also blamed his actions on the abuse he endured as a young child. However, through all of that, Brown maintained he never physically struck Molly.
“The world now thinks I beat my wife,” Brown said. “I have never hit this woman. I never hit her not once.”
“There were things that you say to yourself and then you’d burn them. ….And I didn’t,” Brown said of the 165 pages of documented confessions. “The fact that my private things are being used against me, that’s hard to swallow. I’m talking about my journals. I had to learn all that and write that down in order to heal, and now you’re telling me that I’m going to be punished for trying to correct the things in my life that needed to be changed.”
After the initial arrest, Brown was placed on a one-game suspension. However, once the documents were released, he was let go by the Giants. It appears he is still hoping to return to the league.
“I want to be able to play again. I want to be able to continue to write this story, continue to be a voice for change,” Brown said in the interview. If a return doesn’t happen, Brown says he’s “fine.”
According to NFL commissioner Roger Goodall, there is still an active investigation on the former kicker.
