On Tuesday, The Hollywood Reporter exclusively revealed that Warner Bros. is “in the early stages” of developing a “Matrix” reboot.
Sources close to the studio say there is an active interest in Michael B. Jordan to replace Keanu Reeves as Neo, but there is much work to be done before the project is ready to go.
Warner Bros. is leery to include original producer Joel Silver, as he sold the rights to the film to the studio back in 2012 for $30 million, and currently has a strained relationship with the Wachowski siblings, who wrote and directed the original film and its two sequels. The siblings, though, are also not involved with the reboot.
Zak Penn, co-writer of “X-Men: The Last Stand,” and co-author of “X2,” and “The Avengers,” is in talks to write a treatment.
“The Matrix,” became a hit when it was released in 1999 and grossed over $460 million worldwide. The film won four Academy Awards and since appeared on lists of the greatest sci-fi flicks, and as of 2012 has a place in the National Film Registry for preservation.
