Just days after Michael Vick suggested Colin Kaepernick should cut his afro to save his career, the former quarterback has reneged in the wake of the widespread backlash.
On Tuesday, Vick sat with Jason Whitlock on FS1’s “Speak for Yourself” to discuss Kaepernick’s protests, unemployment and his look. During the conversation, Vick attributed Kaepernick’s unemployment to his game play rather than his protest last season. As he went on, Vick suggested that the baller ditch the afro for a “clean-cut” look, in an effort to dress for success.
Many did not take kindly to Vick’s advice. Social media users called out the former quarterback for his statements, claiming the only reason he got rid of his braids was because he had to for prison. While Whitlock defended Vick’s comments, calling critics hypocritical, Vick took it upon himself to come forward and address the matter and apologize for what he said.
On Thursday, Vick issued an apology on the “Dan Patrick Show” saying, “What I said, I should have never said.”
“I think it was taken out of context in regards to what I was trying to convey, but I only want to help Colin Kaepernick,” Vick said. “I’m not a general manager, I’m not the guy who makes the decisions on getting him signed, and I’m truly sorry for what I said. I think I should have used a better choice of words.”
“His afro has nothing to do with him being signed and I wasn’t trying to relay that message,” he added. “It was more about helping him at the end of the day.”
