Dave Chappelle has been in the comedy industry for 30 years and even after he walked away from his hit show, “Chappelle Show,” 13 years later he steps on stage like he hasn’t missed a beat. At the start of 2017, Chappelle released two specials, followed by two more Netflix specials.
Throughout the year, the comedian was ranked top 10 on the 50 Best Stand Up Comics of All Time, according to Rolling Stones and won an Emmy Award for his appearance on Saturday Night Live. With Chappelle being on the top of the game there will always be some criticism. There are two beliefs when it comes to comedians. One, comedians are able to say whatever they want or two, comedians can’t say certain things about certain people. Apparently, Chappelle is on the side of saying what you feel as a comedian.
After receiving backlash for his jokes about the LGBTQ community in his first Netflix special, he discussed the controversy in his recent special, Equanimity. “ I don’t understand all the choices people make but I do understand that life is hard and those types of choices don’t disqualify you from a life with dignity, happiness, and safety,” he said. “But if I’m honest, my problem has never been with transgender people, my problem has always been with dialogue about transgender people. I feel like these things should not be discussed in front of blacks. Its f*cking insulting all this talk about how these people feel inside. Since when has America given a f*ck about how we feel inside?”

Chappelle also discussed poor white Trump supporters, “I’m standing there, thinking in my mind, ‘You dumb motherf***ers. You are poor. He’s fighting for me.” In a very tactful way, Chappelle talked about America in the Trump era. He summed up the story of Emmett Till and added that the picture of Till caused a lot of change and maybe with the mistakes that Trump makes, the nation will wake up to get things going in the right direction. Chappelle did again and it is a great watch to start your year.
