Spike Lee is no stranger to providing his candid thoughts regarding his disdain for Donald Trump — or as he often refers to him as, “Agent Orange.”
On Monday during a New York screening of his new film, “BlacKkKlansman,” Lee added to his growing list of comments directed at Trump by urging the Celebrity-in-Chief to “wake up, wake the f**k up.”
“He’s a man of hate, violence, and can’t be trusted to make moral decisions,” Lee reportedly told Vanity Fair prior to Monday’s screening. “We can’t be silent anymore. He’s on the wrong side of history, and we are on the right side of history with this film.”
Starring John David Washington, Adam Driver, and Alec Baldwin, the film is based on the true story of Ron Stallworth, a black Colorado police officer who successfully infiltrated and became head of a local Ku Klux Klan chapter. The motion picture ends with actual footage from the 2017 protests in Charlottesville where a woman was killed after a man rammed his car into a crowd of counter-protesters. The scene also includes Trump’s televised response to the civil unrest.
In May, during the film’s debut at the annual Cannes Film Festival, the 61-year-old filmmaker slammed Trump for not denouncing the Ku Klux Klan and the alt-right for inciting violence during the rally.
“We have a guy in the White House — I’m not gonna say his f—ing name — who defined that moment not just for Americans but the world, and that motherf—er was given the chance to say we are about love, not hate,” Lee told reporters. “It was a defining moment, and he could have said to the world, not just the United States, that we were better than that.”
He went on to continue, “This right-wing (expletive) is not just America. It’s all over the world. And we have to wake up. “We can’t be silent. It’s not black, white, or brown. It’s everybody. We all live on this planet, and this guy in the White House has the nuclear code. I go to bed thinking about it,” Lee said.
Spike Lee’s “BlacKkKlansman” opens in theaters August 10.
