A Minneapolis family says a routine drive home turned into a terrifying fight for survival after a tear gas canister exploded beneath their vehicle during an encounter with ICE officers.

Shawn and Destiny Jackson were traveling with their six children, ranging in age from six months to 11 years old, when they became stuck between protesters and federal agents. The family had just left basketball practice and was attempting to get home when officers approached their car and ordered them to leave the area.
According to Destiny Jackson, the couple tried to comply but could not safely move because people were surrounding the vehicle. She said the officers continued shouting demands as the family remained inside, attempting to avoid hitting anyone.
Moments later, Destiny says officers walked behind the vehicle and deployed a tear gas canister underneath it. Within seconds, an explosion lifted the car off the ground. Airbags deployed, doors locked, and thick tear gas began filling the cabin where the children were trapped.
Panic set in as Destiny worked to unlock the doors and pull her children from the smoke-filled vehicle. With help from nearby bystanders, the children were removed one by one. The last to be rescued was the couple’s infant son, who Destiny says appeared unresponsive and struggling to breathe. She administered CPR until he began to recover.
The family was assisted by strangers who opened their home to provide shelter and aid. All six children were later confirmed to be physically safe, though their parents say the emotional impact remains severe.
