Over 600 Women Sue Hospital for $6 Billion After Doctor Performed Unnecessary Hysterectomies

Javaid Perwaiz

More than 600 women are now seeking accountability in a sweeping civil lawsuit tied to disgraced OB-GYN Javaid Perwaiz, alleging years of abuse carried out inside a Virginia hospital that kept its doors open to him despite repeated warnings. Filed December 29, 2025, in Chesapeake City Circuit Court, the lawsuit accuses Chesapeake Regional Medical Center and several current and former executives of knowingly allowing Perwaiz to perform medically unnecessary procedures, including hysterectomies, C-sections, and D&Cs, for nearly a decade.

The plaintiffs are collectively seeking $6 billion, with each woman demanding $10 million in damages. According to the complaint, “The procedures that Perwaiz performed on Plaintiffs included irreversible hysterectomies and other medically unnecessary surgeries.” Many of the women say they were never properly informed or did not consent to what was done to their bodies.

Federal investigators previously determined Perwaiz carried out these procedures to increase insurance reimbursements. Authorities estimate more than $20 million was fraudulently billed, while patients were left with permanent physical and emotional harm.

“Many women who were subjected to this did not know what surgeries they had or why,” said FBI Special Agent Desiree Maxwell. “The patients were afraid, and he manipulated them.”

One of the newest plaintiffs, Shantel Boone, says she learned years later that her uterus had been removed.

“No. I do not have a uterus…And I found all of that out later going to another physician,” she said. “Night sweats, hormonal mood swings, just feeling depressed. And, I lost my husband.”

Perwaiz lost his medical license and is currently serving a 59-year federal prison sentence after being convicted on 52 counts of health care fraud. The civil case now turns the spotlight on the systems that allowed his conduct to continue for decades.
