A$AP Rocky is making it clear that he’s done playing into the old-school “gangsta” tropes that have dominated rap for decades. While sitting down with Michael Sebastian for Esquire, the Harlem rapper opened up about the message behind his long-awaited project, “Don’t Be Dumb.” It turns out the title is more than just a catchy phrase; it’s a direct challenge to the reckless behaviors that have historically defined street life in hip-hop.
Rocky explained that while his earlier music might have leaned into “crash dummy” energy, this new era is all about a sobering reckoning. He noted that there’s a major shift happening in the culture, with artists finally admitting that the streets haven’t given them anything but pain.
“These individuals who once embraced the ‘gangsta’ persona are now uncovering the truth; this narrative is an illusion,” he shared, adding that he’s siding with the growing “f**k the streets” movement.
This mindset puts him right in line with 21 Savage, who recently sparked a massive conversation by calling out the industry for making trauma look cool. “We’ve gained nothing from the streets but trauma,” Savage wrote, a sentiment that Rocky says heavily influenced the tone of his new work.
The movement is currently splitting the rap world down the middle. Rappers like G Herbo, YFN Lucci, and Pooh Shiesty have already stepped up to support the need for more honest storytelling. On the other side of the fence, artists like Blueface, Fivio Foreign, and 6ix9ine are pushing back, seemingly sticking to the traditional script.
For Rocky, the goal is to show that there’s more to life than the cycle of violence and “crash dummy” antics. By prioritizing his own mental health and growth, he’s hoping to lead by example.
As he put it simply, the streets are a trap that many don’t make it out of, and it’s time to start talking about what that actually costs.
