The investigation into the tragic wreck that claimed the lives of Anthony Joshua’s closest team members has taken a major turn toward the courtroom.
On Friday, 46 year old Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode made his first appearance at the Sagamu Magistrate Court to answer for the December 29 collision. Kayode, who was behind the wheel of the Lexus SUV carrying the champ and his team, is now staring down four criminal charges that point to major negligence on the road.
According to the official investigation from the Ogun State Police Command, Kayode is being held responsible for the deaths and injuries that occurred when the vehicle slammed into a stationary truck on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. The counts include dangerous driving causing death, reckless and negligent driving, and failing to show due care and attention, which led to both bodily harm and property damage. In a move that has many people talking, authorities also hit him with a charge for allegedly driving without a valid national driver’s license.
In a statement released to the public on Friday, authorities confirmed the arraignment, “The Ogun State Police Command wishes to inform the general public that the driver of the Lexus SUV involved in the Anthony Joshua accident case, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode (male), aged 46, was charged at the Sagamu Magistrate Court today.”
The tragedy has left a massive hole in Joshua’s camp. While the former heavyweight champion was lucky to escape with minor injuries, the impact was fatal for his “day ones.
Joshua’s personal trainer, Latif Ayodele, and his strength coach, Sina Ghami, both 36, were killed at the scene.
Kayode was granted bail in the amount of 5,000,000 Naira, which is roughly $3,500, but he remains in custody until those conditions are officially met.
The magistrate has adjourned the matter, with the trial officially scheduled to start on January 20, 2026.
