Akon Pays Former Business Partner $850K in Ongoing Lawsuit

Akon has paid his ex-business partner $850K to settle a portion of their ongoing lawsuit.

In 2021, music executive Devyne Stephens filed a $4 million lawsuit against Akon. In the lawsuit, Stephens claims that the singer owes him money from a 2018 settlement agreement.

Last month, Stephens asked a judge to freeze Akon’s assets which the singer says was done “out of spite.” However, a Manhattan Supreme Court Justice denied Stephens’ request because “as moot, as this issue has been otherwise resolved pursuant to an agreement between the parties,” the brief ruling says.
Nevertheless, Akon’s rep states the $850,000 will resolve a partial portion of the suit.

“This week I fully resolved Devyne Stephens’ court application to freeze my New York assets,” Akon says in a statement. “Although I have several substantial claims that will be pursued against Stephens in the pending case. I paid him $850,000. Some of which I still challenge. To show the public that he was flat out wrong about any inability to pay the last installment of our prior settlement. My work on Akon City in Africa and Akoin cryptocurrency is too important to be tarnished and harmed by Stephens.”

For a while, Akon has been creating a new city and currency in Africa which Stephens dubbed as a Ponzi scheme during his asset freeze request.
The two former partners continue to work to find a common ground but until then, Stephens’ lawyer says, “We are pleased by Akon’s payment of $850,000 to Mr. Stephens to satisfy one of his outstanding debts. We look forward to prevailing on our other claims in this case.”
