Good news for travelers! The State Department announced on Wednesday that U.S. citizens can now renew their adult passports online, eliminating the need to print forms and mail checks. This new digital service aims to make the renewal process quicker and more convenient.
“By offering this online alternative to the traditional paper application process, the Department is embracing digital transformation to offer the most efficient and convenient passport renewal experience possible,” the State Department said in a statement. They added that with improved staffing, technological upgrades, and various other enhancements, the current processing time for a routine passport is now about one-third of what it was last summer and well below the advertised six to eight weeks.
The online renewal system, which was first launched as a public beta in June, is now fully operational and available around the clock. The requirements for online renewal are similar to the mail-in process: applicants must upload a passport photo, pay the necessary fees, and be within the renewal timeframe. Passports that have expired within the last five years can also be renewed online.
Currently, the service is only available for adult passport renewals and only for those living in the United States or its territories. The State Department has not yet extended this service to minors or U.S. citizens living abroad.
With the new system, the State Department is aiming to modernize the passport renewal experience, making it easier for Americans to stay travel-ready. Whether planning a last-minute getaway or updating travel documents ahead of time, renewing a passport is now just a few clicks away.
