Angela Bassett Doesn’t Believe She Was “Robbed” Of An Oscar For Her Role As Tina Turner, “I Don’t Walk Away Thinking ‘I’ve Been Robbed”

Despite waiting 29 years between Academy Award nominations, Angela Bassett harbors no resentment towards not winning for her role in the 1993 film “What’s Love Got to Do with It.”

On CBS Mornings Friday, the 64-year-old mentioned that being nominated for an Oscar in 2023 “seems a lot busier” than when she received a nomination for her portrayal of Tina Turner in the music biopic.

“You know, I was green. I was in my salad days, as they say,” Bassett said to Gayle King when discussing her nominations throughout her career.

King then asked Bassett if she felt cheated for not winning the Best Actress Oscar at the 66th Academy Awards, where Holly Hunter won for “The Piano.” However, Bassett clarified that she does not view the incident from that perspective.

“Of course, in the moment you’re hoping and praying and wishing [you’ll win],” the Emmy award winning actress explained. “But I never – I don’t walk away thinking ‘I’ve been robbed.’ That’s too negative of an emotion to carry with me for the rest of my life. I choose to believe there was a reason why it didn’t happen.”

In the current instance, Bassett has received an Oscar nomination for her portrayal of Queen Ramonda in the Marvel Cinematic Universe film “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” Her character takes up the mantle of leadership in the fictional nation of Wakanda after the demise of King T’Challa, played by Chadwick Boseman.

On Sunday, the actress expressed the significance of the nomination for the Marvel film and its late star, as it is nominated for outstanding action performance by a stunt ensemble in a motion picture.

“It means a lot to return with this project that meant so much to him, and he was such a delight,” she said. “So I’m just here representing.”
