Apple Rolls Out DIY Self-Service Repair Program

Apple has officially launched its DIY repair service in the United States.

As a way to cut down on the often packed Apple stores, the company has unveiled its plan to provide Apple users with the tools needed to repair their own devices. Currently, the DIY program is only available for iPhone 12, iPhone 13, and third-generation iPhone SE.

Under the “Self Service Repair” initiative, Apple will sell kits to customers with detailed instructions and tools to fix their phones. All parts are available through Apple’s Self Service Repair Store. Customers may also rent a kit for $49 for seven days.

In the past, Apple has shied away from providing replacement parts. Some Apple products have even displayed warning signs when repaired with non-Apple components. However, the Self Service Repair program allows users to buy everything from the company, giving them peace of mind that the parts are good.

Apple does caution that only skilled technicians should purchase the tool kits, but inexperienced customers are also free to buy them. This is a concerning factor, as it could lead to trips to added trips to the Apple store if repaired incorrectly.

The company plans to soon expand the program to other countries and other devices, including MacBooks and Apple watches.
