Arkansas Off-Duty Cop Charged With Killing Fellow Officer After Telling Others He Would Shoot Any Protester Who Came To His Door

An Arkansas police officer has been charged with manslaughter in the fatal shooting of his fellow officer who was knocking on his door.

According to court documents, when protests against police brutality first broke out, Calvin “Nick” Salyers, 33, told a colleague he would “shoot through the door” at any protesters who came to his home.

And on June 3, his words eerily came to light when he fatally shot fellow officer Scott Hutton, 38, who came knocking on his door.

Hutton arrived at Salyers’ home around 7 pm to pick up a patrol car, which was parked nearby, according to court documents.

Hutton texted Salyers, “are you awake,” when he arrived at the home. When he didn’t get a response, Hutton walked up to the front door and knocked.

Salyers, who was off-duty at the time, was watching a movie inside with his girlfriend. He grabbed his Glock .40-caliber handgun and went to check who it was. He looked through the peephole and saw a “figure standing on his porch with a dark shirt and a gun on his hip,” the affidavit claims.

Salyers said he tried to transfer his gun from his right to his left hand to open the door, and the gun went off, describing the shooting as an “accidental discharge.”

He called 911, and Hutton was transported to a local hospital, where he died.

The investigation found that a single bullet traveled through the wooden front door and a glass storm door before hitting Hutton. It also discovered that Salyer’s gun had been pressed against the door when it was fired and that Hutton was “standing at an angle and not squarely facing the door.”

On Wednesday, Salyers was charged with manslaughter.
