ASAP Rocky is finally speaking out on the long-standing conspiracy theories and “dark” rumors tied to his fashion mentors, Rick Owens and Michele Lamy.
During a recent appearance on The Joe Budden Podcast, Rocky engaged in a candid discussion regarding the occult and ritualistic speculation that follows the couple’s gothic aesthetic, Rocky made it clear that while their vibe is undeniably intense, his connection to them is strictly about the elevation of his art.
Addressing the confusion many in hip hop have regarding Lamy, Rocky acknowledged the provocative nature of her world while maintaining his own boundaries. “I let them mentor me like you know what I’m saying is hip-hop misunderstanding her who Michelle led me. I can’t justify the dark shit and weird shit she do. Do she worship the devil I wouldn’t know cuz she don’t do none of that shit around me but they have iconography and imagery that looks like it’s very you know,” he shared. When pointed toward their boundary-pushing ad campaigns, Rocky offered a grounded perspective on their lifestyle. “But they gay, Rick Owens is Gay. Yeah well I dont think its just a gay thing. It’s the Imagery. Its dark bro. I cant justify That Shit. Yo Bro we talking about gay Europeans. I understand that But thats them.”
The rapper was firm in debunking the idea that his involvement in high-fashion circles involves anything supernatural or ritualistic. He insisted that his presence in their world is about comfort and education rather than “spells” or “rituals.”
“I love the fact im comfortable in those rooms. You know it aint no spells being casted. When Im around I can’t justify. And i ain’t doing no rituals,” Rocky explained. Instead, he credits Lamy for breaking down his creative barriers. “Like she just taught me about art. She took my freeze off it. Shot my album cover. Gave me nice diamond ring. To do an album cover. Called At Long Last. She creative directed. A lot of stuff for me. I never loved that lady She always showed me love. Embraced and taught.”
Rocky further explained that his fascination with their “dark” style actually stems from a deep appreciation for cinema and history rather than the underworld. He compared his visual taste to the work of legends like Tim Burton and composer Danny Elfman. “This album covers Tim Burton right. That’s crazy And Danny Elfman. Some weird flexes you put on there. Basically i been a fan of him. Like im obsessed with german expressionism. German,” he added.
By connecting the dots between his album art and German Expressionism, Rocky is showing that what many mistake for “dark rituals” is actually just a high-level appreciation for complex, historical art forms.
