We already knew Kobe Bryant was a big deal, but now, on top of everything else he’s accomplished, the retired NBA legend is about to get his own day. August 24, or 8/24 (the two numbers worn by Bryant during his career with the Lakers), has officially been dubbed “Kobe Bryant Day” by the Los Angeles City Council. It will be a day to honor the former Laker for all of his achievements in basketball, as well as his charitable contributions in the community.

As L.A. City Council member Jose Huizar put it,”‘Kobe Bryant Day’ is the City of Los Angeles’ way of thanking him for his single-minded dedication to excellence, the fans and the entire City and region of Los Angeles. For 20 years, we were all the beneficiaries of Kobe’s incredible talent & legendary work ethic, and on 8-24 we’ll gather to say, ‘Thank you, Mamba.'”

It is definitely an exciting week for the five-time NBA champion. On Monday, he got a chance to ring the bell at the New York Stock Exchange as he announced the launch of his new $100 million venture capital firm. He will celebrate his 38th birthday on Tuesday, and then cap off his big week on Wednesday as he is honored by the entire city of Los Angeles.
