The family of Adriana Smith is still praying for a miracle. Her son, Chance, who was delivered four months after she was declared brain dead, remains in critical condition and won’t be coming home any time soon.
Adriana, a dedicated Atlanta nurse, was just eight weeks pregnant when she suffered a medical crisis earlier this year. Doctors found multiple blood clots in her brain, and she was declared brain dead in February. But because of Georgia’s strict abortion law that bans the procedure after six weeks, Adriana was kept on life support until her baby reached a point where doctors could deliver him.
On June 13, Chance came into the world weighing just 1 pound, 13 ounces. He’s spent every day since in the NICU. As of late November, his condition remains fragile.
“It’s holiday season, and I’m very down,” shared Adriana’s mother, April Newkirk, in a GoFundMe post. “Chance is 11 pounds, still in the nic unit and will not be coming home soon.”
She added, “He’s going to be moved to a different hospital for more help with his health, and I want everyone to know that I’m very grateful for your prays and help. Continue to pray because God has the final say so.”
Back in October, Newkirk said Chance’s lungs were underdeveloped, making it hard for him to breathe on his own.
The GoFundMe has raised over $560,000 to cover the child’s medical treatments and also care for Adriana’s 7-year-old son.
